TEAM 1 / WEEK 1 / 2016-2017

Structural Engineering 101

Great design is all about details. With innovative material selection, sensible construction techniques and modern aesthetics one can craft a unique design language that sets a new standard. -Roi James

What: Structural Engineering 101 – What is an Engineer & How do you become one

Where: Sargent & Lundy, 55 East Monroe St.

When: Thursday, November 10, 5:00 – 7:00 pm

Why:

First, we had two presentations on Structural Engineering that explained what an engineer does on a daily basis and the process of becoming an engineer (school, career experience, tests, etc).

Then, we did a few fun icebreakers to help the team get to know each other! We had to line ourselves up in order four times – once in order of the closest to the farthest that a person had traveled (everything from Chicago to West Austrailia!); once in order of birth month and day (everything from January to December – go figure); once in alphabetical order of the first letter of our first name; and once in order of height shortest to tallest ( I admit I was at the beginning of this line!).

Finally, we did the dots and spaghetti activity! So fun!!! The students were seperated into groups in order to compete in designing the tallest or best design structure. The materials were obviously dots candy and hard spaghetti noodles. Great job on your collaboration guys!! Team work is so important in design, and it was obvious that people were putting their heads together to make these structures.
